I knew John as a younger man. Hungry for life and adventure. To my shame I didn't always make his journey As smooth as I could have or should have, But in the long run hope that I helped shape John into the man he became. Remembering my team member John on September 11th 2017. I always think about what technologies or frameworks John would have mastered to promote for the business strategy. Most likely he would champion the notion of Microservices architecture since this is an in-demand concept in 2017. RIP John and I always will remember your contributions to Marsh (and Marsh & Mclennan) technology strategy.

It's hard to believe that its 15 years since I last saw John the evening of September 10th 2001 on the 95th floor of WTC1. However as members of Marsh's Enterprise Architecture team we always looked forward to the next day to work on projects that impacted the Marsh (and Marsh & McLennan Companies) global operations. John was an amazing colleague and always willing to share and give a helping hand when needed. John was also a spiritual and man of faith, these traits also had impact on his work colleagues. In John's memory we must alway keep our faith despite how challenging life may be.

It's been 11 years and one day since I last saw John at our office on the 95th floor of WTC #1. Our cubicles were next to each other and as Enterprise Architects, we shared knowledge related to our technology domain expertise. It was John who introduced me to the Java J2EE framework, software design patterns, Websphere and IONA application server“ he was never selfish to share knowledge. But, I remember John the most from all the wonderful pictures he had displayed of his kids artwork in his cubicle and commitment to God. John will always be remembered.

John, I always think of what type of enterprise architecture initiative you would be leading each year based on industry trends. Certainly this year you would be researching and piloting the pros/cons of implementing an application via cloud computing. I am sure you would agree that the most interesting aspect of the Enterprise Architect job at Marsh was to manage the vendors who would try to sell solutions, aligning technology to the business needs and pitching ideas to Bernard M Craig H and stakeholders to provide funding. In the case of cloud computing, I know you would present a strong value proposition and benefits for the Marsh business operations. I enjoyed working with you!

It has been eight years since I last saw my former team member on September 10th 2001. However, I always think of John's leadership and technology expertise. I am sure John would be working on initiatives related to Cloud Computing and Web Services right now. But, John is always remembered for his commitment to family and God. I never met John but from reading the tributes he was a good man, great friend and family man. The October after the 9/11 attacks I ran the St. George Marathon in Utah they passed out cards with the victims names on it to pin on your singlet to run with. I received John's name. Ever since that day every marathon that I run or grand canyon crossing that I do. I wear that card that has 2 American Flags and John's name on it. It reminds me of all the innocent victims lives that were taken. I pray for John and his family. I wish that I had the opportunity to meet John although running with him all these years it seems like I have known him forever. God Bless all the victims and their families.

It has been seven years since I last saw John on September 10, 2001 at the Marsh office at WTC1 95th floor. Myself and John were hired by Craig Hayashi in June 1998 and we were part of an unique team called the Enterprise Architecture Group. Our job was to be thought leaders in our respective technology domain of expertise and to help Marsh's (and MMC companies) senior level executives, business leaders and technology group understand how new technology solutions could be leveraged to support the business tactical and strategy goals. As a software architect, John led the team's initiative to exploit JAVA and was instrumental in establishing J2EE as the software architecure framework standard at Marsh. I can remember when John worked on the initiative to select an application server standard for Marsh. He was proactive in his efforts and had recommended the IONA application server (www.iona.com). Although his recommendation was turn down by senior management due to IBM's Websphere application server having greater marketshare, John led the efforts to establishing development standards leverage IBM's Websphere at Marsh. John had a strong commitment to his religion faith and family - his office was full of family photos and artwork drawn by his kids. In terms a colleague, John was always supportive of my initatives as Marsh's Data Warehouse Architect. John's family and friends should be proud to know that he made an impact on his colleagues at Marsh and always had a positive attitude and humble demeanor. Hi John, I can't believe you have been gone for 6 years,I think about you everyday, and I miss you so much, I miss having a big brother.So many times I need you and want to talk, and I am thankful that at least they still have these tributes up so family and friends can feel a bit closer to you. John, I still remember the day I came to your desk to help set up PC Anywhere for you and Jason Ma, since you were both new employees. I remember noticing a Promise Keepers calendar on your desk and I told you about my friend Jonathan Randall, who also worked with us at Marsh and how he also was involved with the Proise Keepers. Im proud of the fact that I was able to bring you two, kind, men of faith together. You were always a friendly and kind person. You are missed> With love, Michael

Until I read the tribute to John from Craig on this website, I knew nothing of John. The only thing I knew was that John G. Ueltzhoeffer was a victim in the World Trade Center on Sept.11th and that his name was randomly selected to be put on the memorial bracelet that I ordered from the internet. Everyday when I put that bracelt on, and every night when I take it off, I am reminded to pray for John's family and to pray for all the victims' families to be able to cope with the tragedy. I am also reminded of how fortunate I am to still have my family. Just having his name on my wrist keeps me praying everyday, and for that, I am thankful. To all who had the opportunity to know John should be thankful as well. God Bless!

During the time I got to know John, three important aspects to his life quickly came across – the pride he took in doing his job, his deep religious convictions, and his love for his family. John was a technical architect in the Marsh technology department so therefore had to have in-depth knowledge about the latest computer technologies. John was very knowledgeable in this subject area so quickly built up a high level of respect with his peers. I remember having many meetings and discussions with John on various technology issues. He would always speak with such enthusiasm and be so up to date with the latest technology developments that it made me make sure I was up to date with my readings just so I could keep up with him. Another aspect of John’s life was his strong religious beliefs. It did not take long in talking with him for his faith in God to come across. I remember whenever we went out to lunch together how he would always take time to say a prayer before having lunch. In the time following John’s passing, I’ve learnt more about this side of John and how involved he was with his church group and friends. This has further impressed me how John lived his life which such conviction. Most importantly, was John’s love for his family. I remember two instances that typify this in John. The first was when he was on a business trip overseas in Europe. He had been gone for about a week and I remember talking to him on the Friday when he was set to come home. He mentioned how he had switched his flight to an earlier flight so he could get home earlier. He then said something to the effect of how hard it was for him to be away from his family. It was not the words that he said that I remember but the way he said it just underlined to me how much he missed them. The second was when a few of us were at lunch. Somehow the conversation turned to our families and John took a picture out of his wallet of him and his wife on their wedding day. One of the guys at lunch remarked how beautiful his wife was and how he thought she looked like a movie star. Upon hearing this John’s face just lit up and you could see the happiness and love he felt. A few paragraphs of words obviously cannot do justice to capture all that John meant to his family and friends. In my own memories I’ll remember John for the unassuming way in which he lived his life and how much of an impact he had on people around him.
