Craig Gibson

Craig Gibson had a number of keen interests, starting with soccer (he played for a Manhattan team called Barnestonworth, but rooted for Liverpool) and continuing with the movies. (He had to be the first to see a new release, and there had to be plenty of popcorn on hand.) And he loved his wife, Dannielle, with whom he immigrated from Australia last December.

But beginning in August, he had a new focus: Daisy, the boxer puppy he gave his wife for her birthday. 'He was so obsessed with this dog,' marveled Mrs. Gibson. At the office, where Mr. Gibson, 37, was a reinsurance broker for Marsh & McLennan, 'instead of doing work he’d be on the Internet, looking up pet stores and buying treats for her.' Sometimes he would come home in the middle of the day to take Daisy for a walk.

It was hardly a one-sided affair. 'She used to sleep on his slippers every night, with her little nose tucked into one of them and her paws over the top,' Mrs. Gibson said. 'She was mad about him.'

Craig was one of my political studies students at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, in the mid-1980s. I remember him as bright, focused, earnest, smart and fun. I lost touch with him thereafter, and learned recently where he had died. What a loss. I just watched the series 9/11: One Day in America. For me, it was a personal tribute to Craig.

I think of Craig every year since 9/11/2001. I assisted in moving his family to New York from Australia. On 9/11 when I heard that offices of Marsh were in the World Trade Center, I wondered about Craig and hoped he was not in the building that day. I believe it took several days or even weeks before all of the names of the victims was published. Once I was finally able to see the list, I was so sad to see Craig's name. I was so sad and felt so sad for his family as well as Craig. I just hope that his family has found a way to carry on. Cheers! Cindy

Hi there Craig, I think about you often. You were a big brother to so many of us back at the Goldfields. Thank you for the passion you brought to ramp cricket. Thanks for helping me realize that changing my majors to Socio and Phsycho did not mean I'd be a loser, destined for misery and poverty. Actually the poverty part was accurate - I'm a high school teacher now. Thanks for the debates you had with the hermit and his little blond buddy. It's amazing how much others can learn from great dinner debates. Thanks for the love, understanding, and caring in a world that seemed to have little of each. I was a postgrad student and Gibbo had just arrived in Joburg, looking for a job. It meant we had a lot of free time, when we really should have been working. We lived near each other in Yeoville, JHB and Gibbo was seldom reluctant to have a lunchtime beer. Which turned into sundowners, and eventually into a late session. In that time, we put the world to rights and felt the day had been constructive. Without Gibbo, no wonder the world's a mess. RIP.

On the 9th of September 2001 I was horrified to learn of Craig's passing from a well known friend in the Restaurant Industry. Today, 9/11/2010, the true horror of what happen has not yet completely settled in. Craig, whilst at Ground Zero a few months ago, I said a special prayer for you. I will never be able to think about New York and 9/11 without sparing a thought for you. The impact it had was profound. Here's to a memory that I hope will bring a smile to all that were part of being the Class of '81 at Brakpan High School. The good times and the bad. We were the BEST! We are still the best! EXCERPT FROM CLOVELLY CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2002 Much as I own I owe The passers of the past Because their to and fro Has cut this road to last. I owe them more today Because they've gone away Robert Frost In last years annual review I wrote of Craig Gibson's performances that 'it was so easy it's like you've never been away. Come back soon'. Sadly, the events in New York last September have meant that this is not to be. Craig did make it look so easy. The ball was not so much belted as caressed to the cover boundary. It's true that his relaxed style did sometimes bring about his downfall but while he was there it was beautiful to watch. Craig did not possess the classic fast bowler's fluid action and rhythm but he intimidated every opening batsman that he played against. His game plan was based on strength, hard work and an indomitable spirit. Pretty much his game plan for life. In cricket, and everywhere else Craig was somone you wanted on your side, not theirs.
