Cesar Alviar: A Lifetime Romantic

Cesar Alviar used to tell his wife, Grace, that everyone is born with a fate, and 'your fate was to marry me.' He saw her dancing, long hair swaying, at a party in their native Philippines and asked where she lived. He was quiet and modest, she said, but very handsome.

It took him three years to win her heart. But he stayed romantic. After 28 years, he still brought her flowers and opened doors for her. He loved to take her ballroom dancing. Three years ago, they renewed their vows. Mrs. Alviar wore an embroidered Filipino wedding dress. Their friends teased them 'You still answered `yes,’ in spite of everything?' Mr. Alviar pointed out that they had been married three times, in a civil ceremony, the religious service, and then this one.

His wife always drove Mr. Alviar, 60, to the bus station in Bloomfield, N.J., so he could get to his job as an accountant at Marsh & McLennan on the 94th floor of 1 World Trade Center. 'He always kissed me before he got out,' she said. But on Sept. 11, he hesitated after the kiss. 'It was like he wanted to say something, but because I was rushing, I just said goodbye.'

I came across this site originally looking for someone else. I decided to read about all 358 people here, and if the stories and tributes are any indication, the world lost incredible, wonderful people that terrible day. America did, and does, stand with all of you.

As part of the 10th anniversay Rolling Requiem, Bainbridge Island (WA) Chorale sang Mozart's Requiem this afternoon. Each singer wore a badge with a heart & the name of a 911 victim My badge had Mr Alviar's name. After the Requiem, I googled his name to find out who I was singing for; and found this site. He seems to have been a great guy. My condolences & best wishes to his family friends

I worked at Victor O. Schinnerer Co. as Colleague in Chevy Chase,Md. in 2001 and when I heard the terrible news, my heart sank. Even though I did not know any of you, I felt for all of you and your family and friends. Its been 10 years but I have not forgotten you. I don't work at VOC any more, but I wear the pin in honor of all the victims and their families and Friends.

Dear Grace, I'm crying as I read this and your lovely tribute to Cesar. I wish so much I had met Cesar. I wish so much that our presious James had both of his Grandfathers, who would love him as we do. But I agree that the best we can do is honor Ralph and Cesar in the way we live our lives so James and our other grandchildren know the kind of wonderful men they were. You said it beautifully. After teary conversation on the phone with Grace, my dearly beloved friend Cesar A. Alviar's widow, I thought of writing this poem in Pilipino, to somehow, ease some of her pain. I have given her a copy of this poem which I dedicate to the love between them and to all September 11 victims and their loved ones. Ngayon Na Kita Iiwan Katha ni Antonio Alonzo (dedicated to love between Cesar and Grace Alviar which is now immortal) Ngayon na kita iiwan Pabayaan mo ako, Habang ang alaala ko Sa iyo ay mabango. Ngayon na kita iiwan Hayaan mo ako, Habang ang pagmamahal mo Sa aki’y di pa nagbabago. Aanhin ko ang natitirang saglit Samantalang hanggang wakas Ang alaala ko sa iyo’y di mawawaglit. Ngayon na kita iiwan Patawarin mo ako Masakit man sa puso ko’y Patunay - ikaw lang ang mahal ko.
